Grand Old Party ‘08

Grand Old Party ‘08

Illustration

A parody on the Republican Party and Grand Theft Auto, this poster was created for Partisan the Sea: A Politically Opinionated Poster Show hosted by Urban Jacksonville, Urban Art Warfare, Halftone Def Studios and AIGA Jacksonville. The idea of “This is such a game” made immediate impact for show attendees.

Blue Flavor commissioned this poster art to be created for their online portfolio, as well as promotions for SXSW, for which they had just reworked the site IA and UX. The core idea for the architecture derived from the acronym P.I.M.P. - People Interacting Meeting People - which was characterized to represent the new SXSW.com website who wants to share his experiences and show off the goods: a whole world of community, interaction, memories, knowledge, fun – everything you’d expect when you go to SXSW all rolled up within the simplicity of a new site.

Web Directions North

Web Directions North

Illustration

This illustration was created for Web Directions North 2008, a two-day conference held in Vancouver, Canada, featuring renowned, inspiring, expert speakers from across the globe. The totem pole concept was selected as the key theme because of the rich heritage of the Native American tribes in the Vancouver area. Elements of modern day technology were injected into the traditional icons of the thunderbird and bear. Throughout the design, tech symbols are hidden creating a fun game of hide-and-seek for the attendees.

Rockstar

Rockstar

Illustration

jQuery asked me to create an illustration to go with their attitude, “Be a Javascript Rockstar!” It’s a pretty radical style that captures more of an extreme, hardcore feel that’s really in-your-face. These guys ARE rockstars. Apparently, though, the drawing was not received with bras and panties thrown onstage but with more of a rumbling and groan from part of the crowd who felt it wasn’t appropriate for the “jQuery crowd”. It WAS a pretty extreme drawing and I guess they just weren’t ready for this jelly.

Smackdown

Smackdown

Illustration

The concept for this illustration came from mistaking a local AdFed beach party entitled “Splashdown” for “Smackdown,” a wrestling-themed event. So along with building some industry buzz by not shaving for over a month, an awe-inspiring, masked wrestler was created to crush foes with gears and sprockets. The illustration was inspired by Mexican influences and the “Mucha Lucha” cartoon. nGen Works attended the event dressed as wrestlers and gave free Smackdown shirts to party goers (dressed in beach attire) that struck amazingly awesome wrestling poses.

Fishleg

Fishleg

Illustration / Logo Design

This multimedia studio was looking for a unique icon - a fish with a leg. Harboring on thoughts of tinker toys and mechanical robots made from leftover pieces, the character Fishleg was evolved. With the can-do attitude of “we can create something out of nothing,” the company and the illustration represented the drive for new and modern technological experiences. Anything is possible with the right minds and the right technology.

AIGA Jacksonville needed a presence at the National AIGA Leadership Retreat so these illustrations for buttons were created to make a lasting impact with fellow attendees. “Who are these from?” could immediately be answered by Andrew Jackson, the founder of the city, and the Jacksonville Jaguars, the famed football team for the city. Representative of the city and the chapter, the illustrations are bold and bright for the fastest growing city of the South.

Concept Design / Logo Design / Branding / Web Design & Development / Flash

Everyone has a creative monster inside of them. This concept was created for a two-day conference that helped designers reinvigorate their creative drive. The idea that burnout and bad ideas stemmed from sick creative monsters spawned the creation of the Creative Monster Research Institute, who helped designers study and find out what was wrong with their creative monsters and how they could nourish them back to healthy statuses. The design look involved a low-tech, analog feel reminiscent of 1960s technology with big buttons and switches, beakers and burners, and lots of diagrams, which were used throughout the website, training video, lab coats, conference badges and more.

Youdio

Youdio

Logo Design

There is a great community of Short Film lovers out there and Youdio was looking to create an online experience for them to come together to create, rate and purchase these films. The name Youdio derived from the “studio” and “you”, the independent filmmaker. The design started with the idea of the filmmaker cropping a scene with his hands. Being in a digital realm, these hands turned into pixels representing the online world. The typeface used harkens back to the golden age of film when filmmakers had smaller budgets but great, original ideas - the essence of Youdio.

Beach Being

Beach Being

Logo Design

Looking to create a name for itself with two simple words and one big idea - Beach Being became a clothing company for people with a passion for life along the coast. The look needed to feel natural and relaxed, as most beach people are. Inspired by driftwood, the hand-crafted lettering balanced with a beach representative helped create this distinguishing proud mark.

Zetetic

Zetetic

Logo Design

The logo redesign for this technology company first needed to solve for the difficult name. By displaying the accent mark on the first syllable and the use of the upside down “e,” the emphasis on the “ah” sound became more apparent. The lime green and dark gray colors added to the feeling of high-tech, modern science which is what Zetetic is all about. Turning the “Z” into an icon also provided the bigger message of “in addition to thinking outside of the box, lets rethink the box.”

Happy Webbies

Happy Webbies

Illustration / Web Design & Development

Basically Happy Webbies are like Happy Bunnies, but for web nerds. Happy Bunnies are those cute furry rabbits that say things like “You’re ugly and that makes me sad” or “Hating you makes me all warm inside.” So switching the focus to the great cast of characters in web development, and our own talents in design, illustration and saying funny things, we listed the people we respected who we thought could take a joke. Merging the benefits of happy hours with Happy Webbies we came up with what we hoped would make the web world laugh. The biggest challenge to date, illustrating new Happy Webbies while still being distinctive.

titofelix

titofelix

Illustration / CD Design / Web Design & Development / Flash

titofelix is a kick ass rock band that needed to create an online experience with as much attitude as they had. Their latest album, “All Good Things…” revolved around growing up different, which the design did as well, focusing on the antagonistic-side looking out. The jellyfish represent the cool kids, who are actually played by titofelix in live performances where they tell the tale of that one kid that tries so hard to fit in. The idea of going against the norm ties in with the band offering free downloads of their new album. Add a kick ass blog, email signup and live show madness courtesy of YouTube and you’re ready for the titofelix experience.

Web Design & Development

North Florida PRSA wanted to make the annual PRSA conference a fun, casual and educational experience that rivaled the best industry events in the country. The website needed to balance a mix of big city vibe and fun while retaining a sense of intimacy. Bright, vivid colors were used to create the energy and excitement the event promised attendees, while the typeface adds to the hip and modern feel NFPRSA needed to convey. The addition of social networking icons for Twitter and Facebook provide a sense of community and intimacy.

Web Design & Development / Integrated Flash

The largest contemporary art museum in the South was looking for an innovative, hip, urban web presence that would get them national recognition. The site needed a sense of energy and freshness while being urban. Flash elements were used to give a sense of activity and draw attention to the current exhibitions while the darker color palette helped create the hip, urban vibe. A content management system made it easy for the client to keep the site’s content current and valuable to users because users also needed to be able to buy tickets, memberships and make donations online so the site integrated with the Museum’s internal systems, as well.

See Change

See Change

Web Design & Development / Integrated Flash

An initiative of Students of the World, See Change is a site that provides an accessible outlet for student groups to document their experiences in developing countries to help raise global awareness and raise funds for their non-governmental organization partners. It was important to create a design that was both professional and appealing to young adults. Because the students’ work is very much real-world, we used elements that suggested the hands-on nature of found objects with a well-used look, worn typefaces and loose swashes of paint and textures. The site gives the students a home for their travel journals, visitors a sense of the urgent need for change, and the world an understanding of See Change’s positive message.
